ERA journal article
I am going over page proofs of my article about the Florida media’s coverage of the Equal Rights Amendment during the 1970s. This was a time when many newspapers were eliminating their women’s pages. The coverage did little to explain the issues. Part of my thesis involves Sen. Lori Wilson – the only woman in the above photo.

Joan Younger Dickinson article
I received news last week that my article about Joan Younger Dickinson is a revise-and-resubmit for a national journal. There were some great suggestions for revisions. JYD was a women’s page and news reporter for United Press during World War II and then she became a writer for the Ladies Home Journal (pictured above). We went through her papers at the University of Wyoming two years ago.

AJHA RIP draft
I am missing my research-in-progress paper presentation at AJHA this week due to the upcoming birth of our son – three weeks or so from now. My researcg is about the discrimination lawsuits filed against the media: one by Mary Lou Butcher (pictured above) vs the Detroit News and another by several female plaintiffs against the Associated Press. Gender discrimination lawsuits (A.P. & Detroit News)
I am proofing my AJHA research-in-progress about the class-action lawsuits that women journaists filed against the Detroit News and the Associated Press. Above is one of the letters from the lawyer representing the women in the A.P. case. It is located at the National Women & Media Collection. I won’t be presenting the research at the AJHA conference this week since the baby’s due date is so close but I will be posting it tomorrow.

Los Angeles Times
PBS is playing this documentary about the Chandlers and the Los Angeles Times this evening. Women’s page editor Maggie Savoy and her husband, editor Jim Bellows, both spent years at the Times. My article about Maggie was published this past March and I am working on an article about Jim. They are two of my favorites.

Ruthe Deskin & Harry Reid
The New York Times had an interesting story this weekend about Senate majority leader Harry Reid – Democrat of Nevada. Here is a link. Las Vegas journalist (and previous Reno women’s page editor) Ruthe Deskin often covered Reid. She had known him since his high schoo years. In fact, when Ruthe questioned some of Reid’s practices a few years ago, he immediately released more documents although it was not required. He made a statement noting that he did not want to disappoint Ruthe. My article about Ruthe is coming out soon in a state history journal. It is based on her papers at UNLV.
