Happy to announce that Women Politicking Politely is now out – books arrived today. It tells the story of six important women – several of whom were women’s page journalists: Marie Anderson, Dorothy Jurney, Marj Paxson, Vera Glaser, Catherine East & Kay Clarenbach.

American Women on the Move: Book about IWY
I enjoyed reading this excellent book, American Women on the Move: The Inside Story of the National Women’s Conference, 1977. There is some overlap with my book, Politicking Politely. There are great stories about Catherine East, Dorothy Jurney and Kay Clarenbach.

My Upcoming Book: Politicking Politely & Well-Behaved Women
I am finishing up the edits on my upcoming book, Politicking Politely: Well-Behaved Women Making a Difference in the 1960s and 1970s. My book focuses on 6 significant women. It includes the relatively unknown stories of two female political operatives who worked behind the scenes along with four female journalists who also occasionally worked within government to advance women’s rights during the 1950s through the 1970s. Much of it centers on Washington, D.C., as well as the more unlikely cities of Madison, Wisconsin, and Miami, Florida. It includes the story of a women’s page journalist who published an official government report in her newspaper section when the White House refused…

I found some great information in Catherine East (pictured above) in her oral history. In my research, I learned that East learned about the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women from the women’s pages of newspapers.

Going over the Catherine East Oral History
I spent this morning going through Catherine East’s oral history. It is available in her papers in the Schlesinger Library. East’s work with women’s page editors Vera Glaser and Dorothy Jurney are part of my upcoming book about women and politics.
