Honolulu Advertiser Women’s Pages in the 1960s

I am working on a journal article about Hawaii women’s page journalists Drue Lytle and Pat Hunter. They both won Penney-Missouri Awards so I found their letters to and from Awards’ director Paul Myhre. The file also included Hunters’ award-winning series about child abuse, LSD and divorce laws.

    Pearl Harbor & Drue Lytle

Today is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Hugh Lytle was the journalist whose teletype message provided Associated Press and the world with the first account of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was married to award-winning Hawaii women’s page editor Drue Lytle. Here is Hugh’s obituary. Drue is mentioned in it. I have been collecting data about Drue for the past few years. I found the above clip which answered many questions and I also located some great letters in the National Women and Media Collection.

Researching Women’s Page Editor Drue Lytle

Today I got back to writing about Drue Lytle – the women’s page editor of the Honolulu Advertiser. She won numerous Penney-Missouri Awards in the 1960s. Her letters back and forth with Awards’ director Paul Myhre can be found in the Penney-Missouri Awards papers at the NWMC. I also found some great articles about Drue. Clearly, women’s page editors like Drue – with help from Paul – were pushing to change the content of women’s pages. For example, Drue was working to add more medical and health news in her section. I am re-starting an article about Drue although the information gathering has been slow. I hired a researcher several…

    The Importance of Weddings Coverage

I loved this New York Times wedding story from yesterday that is getting a lot of buzz. From the story: “The bride, 97, is keeping her name.” While often overlooked as soft news, wedding stories can have value. They were a key part of the women’s pages for decades. As Chicago Editor Colleen “Koky” Dishon noted: “As we wrote about weddings and births and debutante balls, we learned about the importance of rites and rituals in people’s lives.” And there were journalism lessons in reporting about those rituals in the lives of women. Fort Lauderdale News women’s page editor Edee Greene pointed out that writing up engagement and wedding announcements…

The last few months have been especially fruitful. I found the above clip which answered many questions and I also located some great letters at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection. I heard from one of Drue’s relatives a few months ago and plan to follow up.

    Drue Lytle’s master’s thesis

I recently came across the master’s thesis of Hawaii women’s page editor Druzella “Drue” Lytle. She wrote “A study of the plays of Rachel Crothers,” under her maiden name Druzella E. Goodwin while at Occidental College in 1937. The UCF ILL was able to track it down and send me a copy. It was very well written although the dedication page did not include a reference to her family. I have not been able to track down information about Drue prior to her college years. I am in the early stages of outlining Drue’s life and career.
