New York Fashion Editor Eugenia Sheppard
Artist Andy Warhol said that Eugenia Sheppard created fashion + gossip. She was a fashion journalism pioneer. I am working on a paper about her career.

Media Report To Women: Newspaper Fashion History
I was excited to see that the new issue of the Media Report To Women is out. It includes my article about the history of newspaper fashion sections in the 1950s and 1960s. It focuses on fashion reporter Eugenia Sheppard and also includes a list of fashion reporters to be studied in the future. It builds on my work on Aileen Ryan and Eleni Epstein.

Guest Blog Post: The Quotable Eugenia Sheppard
(Editor’s note: This is a guest post by talented UCF journalism student Baileigh Johnson. She has interned at several publications including Marie Claire Magazine and Orlando Magazine. She shares my interest in fashion journalism. Here is her blog.) On November 12, 1984, six years before I was born, and 28 years before I would learn her name, The New York Times ran an obituary, Section B, Page 15, titled “Eugenia Sheppard, Fashion Columnist, Dies.” This was the first article I ever read about Eugenia Sheppard, as well as the first indication of a thought that is now a reality: I had found my icon. A research opportunity secured this thought,…

New Eugenia Sheppard Image
I just came across this photo of the great fashion writer Eugenia Sheppard – who is on the far left. It was taken in 1964 after designer Pauline Trigere’s fashion show in New York City. I have unearthed some great sources about Sheppard lately. Sheppard covered fashion for the New York Herald Tribune in the 1960s.

Eugenia Sheppard Blog Post
I found this great blog post about fashion journalist Eugenia Sheppard from the Fashion School Daily at the Academy of Art. This is part of the post:“Ms. Sheppard was an American fashion journalist and newspaper columnist, credited with revolutionizing fashion reporting during her time at the New York Herald Tribune. She reported on all of the major designers, as well as the up-and-coming ones, and was known for her “personalized approach to fashion and her ability to spot trends even before the trend-setters realized they were setting them” (NY Times). And she always said exactly what she felt, making for some very memorable remarks.”I am collecting information about Eugenia for a…

Fashion, Economy & Newspapers
I loved this book, Overdressed, about the economy, history and the sociology of fashion. It is well written and strongly researched. The author touches on several issues that relate to the women’s pages. For example, she wrote about the increased consumption of cheap clothes or “fast fashion.” In part, this is because so few people sew now. Sewing clothes used to be so common place that women’s pages would include sewing patterns. I am working on revisions for an article about fashion editor Eleni Epstein and will be including information from this book. I plan to write about fashion writer Eugenia Sheppard in the fall.
