My Article in Historiography of Mass Communication
In honor of pioneering woman in newspaper management Irene Nolan’s death, I wrote about the women who came after the “firsts.” (In Nolan’s case, she became a managing editor after Carol Sutton.) I wrote about Nolan and the need to study those who came after the firsts in the current issue of the Historiography of Mass Communication.

Women’s History Month: Day 20 & Carol Sutton
Day 20 of Women’s History Month features Carol Sutton. She reformed her women’s page to make it more relevant in the 1960’s and was later promoted to managing editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal. She was the first woman in such a management position at a newspaper that her family did not own. During her tenure, the newspaper won Sigma Delta Chi and Roy Howard awards for public service for coverage of school desegregation in Louisville. She was a winner of a Penney-Missouri Award. March is Women’s History Month. Last year, I blogged each day in March about top food editors from my book, The Food Section. This year I blogged for different publications for Women’s History Month. I blogged for Ms Magazine about women’s page editor turned managing editor Carol Sutton. I also blogged for Ms Magazine about feminist leader Roxcy Bolton. She was a good friend of Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson. I will speak about Roxcy at the 2015 Florida Historical Society’s Annual Meeting in St. Augustine. Pushing for Parity at Excellence in Journalism
I enjoyed talking about the need for more women in newspaper management at the Pushing for Parity session in Nashville for the Excellence In Journalism conference. I spoke about my research on three female “firsts” in newspaper management: Gloria Biggs, Carol Sutton and Janet Chusmir. All three of the women started in the women’s pages of their newspapers.
