Al Neuharth Has Died
Gannett executive and USA Today founder Al Neuharth died on Friday. He is pictured above with women’s page editor Dorothy Jurney. Neuharth was an advocate for women in journalism. He named women’s page editor Gloria Biggs as the first woman to be a Gannett publisher. Several years later, he named women’s page editor Marjorie Paxson to be a Gannett publisher. Neuharth was married to Florida Senator Lori Wilson in the 1970s. Here is a link to an article I wrote about Wilson and her fight to get the E.R.A. passed in her state.

FHQ article: Media’s coverage of the ERA in Florida
The new issue of the Florida Historical Quarterly is out. It is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Florida Historical Society. The issue includes an article I wrote about the media’s coverage of the Equal Rights Amendment in Florida in the 1970s – especially the coverage of Florida Sen. Lori Wilson.

ERA journal article
I am going over page proofs of my article about the Florida media’s coverage of the Equal Rights Amendment during the 1970s. This was a time when many newspapers were eliminating their women’s pages. The coverage did little to explain the issues. Part of my thesis involves Sen. Lori Wilson – the only woman in the above photo.

New image of Florida Sen. Lori Wilson
Today I found this image of Florida Sen. Lori Wilson – she is sticking her tongue out at Gov. Bob Graham. It can be found in the Florida Memory Project. I am finishing revisions on an article about Sen. Wilson, her fight for the Equal Rights Amendment and the Florida media’s coverage of the issue. I focus on the coverage in the women’s pages and then the news sections. The manuscript is a revise and resubmit for a state history journal.

Equal Rights Amendment revisions
I am working on revisions on my history article about the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment in Florida. I am focusing on how Florida newspapers covered the issue, especially the coverage of Sen. Lori Wilson. I received some great recommendations from reviewers. I hope to complete revisions in the next few weeks.
