I was happy to get an acceptance for presentation about Ohio food editors for the 2020 Food Studies Conference. The Golden Era of Newspaper Food Journalism Questions about cooking? Lost a cherished recipe? Planning a holiday menu? For decades, it was the newspaper food editor who answered these questions from readers. The newspaper food editors were important to their communities as they wrote about food trends, popular recipes, and local restaurants. The readers responded with calls and letters to the food section. Women’s History Month: Day 31 & Ruth Ellen Church
On the final day of Women’s History Month for 2017, I am featuring Ruth Ellen Church, the food editor of the Chicago Tribune who wrote under the pen name of Mary Meade for many years. She was the food editor from 1936 to 1974. She was also known as the country’s first wine editor. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1933 with a degree in food and nutrition journalism. The photo above is from the Special Collections at that University. I plan to find out what information they have about her college years. Happy to see The Food Section was included in the 2016 Catalog. I am now working on a book about Miami food history which includes food editors Jeanne Voltz and Virginia Heffington. I will be blogging about my research in July.

Food Studies Conference: The First Newspaper Wine Editor, Ruth Ellen Church
I am virtually presenting a paper for the Food Studies Conference next fall: “The First Lady of Wine Journalism: Ruth Ellen Church.” I just received the email acceptance and am looking forward to talking about the wine coverage in the women’s pages. The first person to write a wine column for an American newspaper was Ruth Ellen Church, the Chicago Tribune food editor who often used the pen name of Mary Meade. Her column began in 1962. Initially, she traveled through Europe to learn about wine. In 1963 she published the cookbook, The American Guide to Wines which included an introduction by esteemed food writer Morrison Wood.
