Miami News’ Billie (Womack) O’Day Images

In going through my files I came across these great images of Billie O’Day, women’s page editor of the Miami News in the 1960s. (Her real last name was Womack but she used the pen name Billie O’Day in both her byline and her professional life at this time.) In the top photo, Billie is in the coat on the far left as she won a Penney-Missouri Award for top women’s page in her circulation size. The second photo is from a Columbia, Missouri hotel room. Billie is giving a thumbs-up and that is Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson nearest the camera. I love the smoke and the…

Papers of the Penney-Missouri Awards are processed

I recently learned the papers of the Penney-Missouri Awards at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri have been processed. Here is the inventory. It’s an impressive listing. The Penney-Missouri Awards, which began in the 1960s, were the top recognition for women’s pages in the country. Awards were given in different circulation sizes with special categories in reporting and fashion. Winners then attended a several-day workshop at the University of Missouri. I wrote about the awards for the April 2006 issue of Journalism History. Among this collection are the stories of most of the top women’s page journalists in the country – especially those who were publishing…

    Searching for Koky Dishon images

I am on the lookout for Colleen “Koky” Dishon images. Dishon was an influential women’s page editor in Ohio, Milwaukee and Chicago. She went on to be the first woman on the masthead of the Chicago Tribune. The above image is from the Penney-Missouri Award papers at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection – my favorite archive. In the photo, she is judging the Awards. I have been frustrated that no one at the Tribune has returned emails or phone calls over the last year in my search for Koky images.

    Penney-Missouri Awards Workshop

I recently found this clip from the Penney-Missouri Awards Workshop. It includes many of the women who I have studied, such as Marie Anderson, Maggie Savoy, Dorothy Jurney and Beverley Morales. Also included in the photo is Fort Lauderdale women’s page editor Edee Greene. I am presenting a paper about Edee at a conference this weekend. Here is a link to the conference program.
