Pushing for Parity at Excellence in Journalism
I enjoyed talking about the need for more women in newspaper management at the Pushing for Parity session in Nashville for the Excellence In Journalism conference. I spoke about my research on three female “firsts” in newspaper management: Gloria Biggs, Carol Sutton and Janet Chusmir. All three of the women started in the women’s pages of their newspapers. Media Report To Women Reference
It was a nice surprise to see that the current issue of Media Report To Women featured the great Poynter column about the research on female firsts in newspaper management that Lance & I published this summer in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly. I will be speaking about the topic next week in Nashville at the SPJ-sponsored Excellence in Journalism conference.

Poynter Post & Excellence in Journalism Talk
I was happy to see the great coverage Poynter gave to the research that Lance and I did about female firsts in newspaper management. Our article “Taking Chances and Making Changes: The Career Paths and Pitfalls of Pioneering Women in Newspaper Management” is in this summer’s issue of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. We looked at the careers of Gloria Biggs,Carol Sutton and Janet Chusmir. They all began their careers in the women’s pages of newspapers. That is a photo of Carol above. Importance of Women & Regional History
I am in the middle of reviewing Eileen M. Wirth’s book From Society Page to Front Page: Nebraska Women in Journalism for an Iowa history journal. It is an important book and I enjoyed her closing messages: “I had no idea how many women of achievement in journalism and other fields have been overlooked even in state and regional histories where they might be expected to appear.” (p 163) Further, she wrote “We cannot understand the history of women in the United States unless we consider local and regional dimensions because family obligations have limited the geographic and career mobility of the vast majority of American women.” (pg 164) Her…
