Women’s History Month: Day 24 & Eleanor Hart

Today’s post for day 24 of Women’s History Month is another member of the Miami Herald’s women’s pages: columnist Eleanor Ratelle who wrote under the name “Eleanor Hart.” Eleanor’s papers are at the HistoryMiami Archives. They include several of Eleanor’s scrapbooks with entries from “A Column With Heart.” The advice column ran in the women’s section of the Miami Herald in the 1950s and 1960s. One of her most direct address to gender roles was in relation to an October 5, 1966 from reader, C.M.R. He identified himself as the husband of a stay-at-home wife with six children. When Private Talk Goes Public

Press is beginning for the new book, When Private Talk Goes Public. I wrote a chapter about gossip and the women’s pages of newspapers in the 1950s and 1960s. The book has earned some nice reviews including these below:‘A magnificent and wondrously wide-ranging anthology of articles on 350 years of gossip about politics, power, diplomacy, celebrity, marriage, morals, murder, mayhem, love, and, of course, sex in its multiple variations, When Private Talk Goes Public has something for everyone who cares about, studies, teaches, or reads American history.’ – David Nasaw, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Professor of History, City University of New York, USA “Brilliantly – and engagingly – these essays…

    Society Reporters Hide Marriages

As I work on my revisions for my book chapter about the role of gossip in the women’s pages, I came across the above story about Miami Herald society editor Eleanor Ratelle. Interesting that it was her job to write about weddings and she hid her wedding from her editor. Eleanor’s advice column is a key part of the book chapter. Here is a link to her papers. Lance & I are presenting a paper about that advice column at NCA this fall. Location:Society coverage

    Eleanor Hart

I just received an email from a relative of Eleanor (Ratelle) Hart. I love hearing from family members of the women I study. Eleanor was a reporter and advice columnist for the women’s pages of the Miami Herald in the 1950s and 1960s. I went through her papers at the South Florida Historical Society in Miami about three years ago and presented a paper about her last year at the Florida Communication Association conference. My paper focused on how her column reflected the community’s negotiation of change in terms of race and gender. The integration of neighborhoods and working mothers led to heated letters from readers. Advice columns, like the…
