New MSD & Department Store Image
I came across this great image of Marjory Stoneman Douglas (she started her career in the women’s pages) in 1947 in a Miami department store. I will be using it in my talk at the Florida Conference of Historians later in the month.

Writing the Miami Food Book
Excited to be back at work on the Miami food book. It’s great to look at the work of Miami Herald writers Marie Anderson and Marjorie Paxson – who is pictured above.

Helen Muir’s Miami Tea Parties
I am working on one of my papers for the 2015 Florida Conference of Historians that I will be presenting next month in Lakeland. It’s called “Miami Maven Helen Muir: Writer, Historian, Advocate & Tea Party Host.” I went through Muir’s papers at the University of Miami a few years ago. Muir held annual tea parties for her friends who sometimes came from across the country to reunite. In this photo are women’s page journalists Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas
I was just assigned a book review of Everglades legend Marjory Stoneman Douglas – the book is called An Everglades Providence. In addition to her environmental work, Marjory wrote for the Miami Herald. She was friends with women’s page journalists Marie Anderson, Helen Muir and Dorothy Jurney. Below is some great video of Marjory. More attention needs to be paid to the work of garden clubs and the work they did in conservation – a common topic for the women’s pages.

New Ken Burns project
The new Ken Burns’ PBS project on the National Parks includes a section on the Everglades. He includes Miami Herald reporter Juanita Greene. She worked with many of the women’s page journalists I studied – Roberta Applegate, Marie Anderson, Helen Muir, etc. These women, along with Marjory Stoneman Douglas, were instrumental in saving the Everglades. I am also collecting information on Miami Herald editor John Pennekamp. He was an early champion of the environment – especially the Everglades. I am going to examine how he framed the cause of conservation. This was also a common cause of women’s page editors and women’s clubs
