Aileen Ryan information
I just received a wonderful email from the Special Collections folks at Mount Mary College – it included several images regarding Milwaukee Journal women’s editor/fashion editor Aileen Ryan. One of those images is featured above – it is announcement about the Aileen Ryan chair in fashion at the College. I wrote a biographical article about Ryan for the Milwaukee History journal in 2004 – focusing on her role as a fashion journalist. I am now planning on putting together an article that focuses more specifically on how she (and the Journal) represented fashion in Milwaukee in the 1950s and 1960s. During this time, Milwaukee was a big player in U.S.…

Aileen Ryan articles
Thanks to new Google News scans, I found found several newspaper articles written by and about Milwaukee Journal women’s page editor Aileen Ryan. She won three Penney-Missouri Awards in the 1960s and was a national expert on fashion. She was the first newspaper reporter to attend the New York Fashion shows in the 1940s. I published a journal article about Ryan in 2004. These recent discoveries have validated what I had published and reinforced the important role Ryan played in fashion journalism. I hope to explore more about fashion coverage in the women’s pages and what it tells us about history.

Aileen Ryan
In the 1960s, Aileen Ryan was a multiple Penney-Missouri winner, the top honor for women’s pages, at the Milwaukee Journal. As women’s page editor, Ryan covered fashion from the 1920s through the 1970s. In 1931, Ryan expanded the scope of fashion news and went to the New York City fashion shows – unheard of for a newspaper editor at the time. In June 1937, photos documenting one of Ryan’s trips to the European fashion shows became the first color photos printed in the Journal. A scholarship is still given out in Aileen’s name at Mount Mary College. Aileen was inducted into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame. My article…
