    Sisters of ’77

Today I am going to watch the film, Sisters of ’77. Here is background about the historic conference in Houston, the first federally funded U.S. National Women’s Conference. I am watching it in preparation for going through the papers of Kay Clarenbach at the University of Wisconsin next month. Kay was the director of the conference. Women’s page editors Marie Anderson, Dorothy Jurney and Marjorie Paxson attended the conference as delegates. Jurney and Paxson would go on to edit the official report to the president. It was just another example of the interaction of women’s page journalism and feminism.

    Typewriter

Lance and I found this typewriter at a Sanford antique shop. It’s a Quiet Deluxe from the 1940s. We got a great deal on it. It reminds me of the photo below. This photo is from the 1940s newsroom of the Michigan News. It includes future women’s page editor Dorothy Jurney. The image can be found in Dorothy’s papers at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri.

    Dorothy Jurney proofs

I just finished the final proofs of my article about legendary women’s page editor Dorothy Jurney. I also just received the permission form for the use of one of her pictures from her papers at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri. This research has been in the works for the past five years. I am so happy that it is coming out in Journalism History this Spring.
