Talk at Urban Rethink
I enjoyed speaking about Florida women’s page editors and their role in building community at Urban ReThink on Tuesday night. I spoke about Marie Anderson and Roberta Applegate from the Miami Herald; Anne Rowe from the St. Petersburg Times and Edee Greene from the Fort Lauderdale News. Women’s Page Editor Margaret Miller
I was pleased to get a lovely email yesterday and to learn about women’s page journalist Margaret Miller. She was an Associated Press reporter from 1944 to 1952 before taking time off to raise her children. She returned to newspapering in Detroit in 1967 as the editor of the women’s section – that would then be called “Suburban Life.” Here is a great column about Margaret and her influence. I liked this: “Margaret was a pragmatist, but one who was skillful in moving business forward whether it be in the day-to-day tasks of getting out the newspaper or in edging forward women’s equality in the workplace.” I also liked the…

New Research Finds
I have completed two orders for new material about women’s page journalism and food journalism. From the Fales Library at NYU, I ordered a transcript of an interview between Associated Press food editor Cecily Brownstone and the great food writer Laura Shapiro. I am presenting a paper about Cecily at the National Communication Association Convention this fall. From the National Women and Media Collection, I placed a large order of copies from the papers of women’s page editor and later publisher Marjorie Paxson. It includes references to Paul Myhre, Edee Green and Jim Bellows. There was also a folder devoted to a food editors meeting.

Remembering Edee Greene
I posted this video about Edee Greene – women’s page editor at the Fort Lauderdale News in the 1960s – on YouTube a few years ago. Last week someone posted the following under the video: “Thank you so much for this. I knew Edee- she as a major influence in my life- mentored my writing career and was a very close and dear friend of my mother’s.from the Fort Lauderdale News.”Edee was one of my favorite subjects to write about. She was smart, witty and kind. She won several Penney-Missouri Awards over the years.

Happy 8th Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary to my wonderful husband and research partner Lance who knows as much about women’s page history as I do. It has been a wonderful eight years. Lance, Curtis & I are celebrating our anniversary and my birthday (tomorrow) in Boca Raton. The Penney-Missouri Award-winning women’s page editor from Boca was Sandra Wesley who I have been lucky enough to exchange a few emails with over the years. Above is a photo of Sandra – she is on the far left. Betty Preston (Glendale, CA, women’s page editor) is in the middle and Edee Greene (Fort Lauderdale women’s page editor) is on the right.

Women Wearing Pants
My paper, “Who’s Wearing the Pants? How The New York Times Reported the Changing Dress of Women,” has just been published in the current issue of Media Report to Women. The wearing of pants was a controversial topic, symbolizing the concern over the changing role of gender roles in society. For some people, pants were another step toward equality for women. For others pants meant losing femininity – almost to the point of androgyny.
