    NCA Paper Acceptance

My paper, “Who’s Wearing the Pants? How The New York Times Reported the Changing Dress of Women,” has been accepted for the fall National Communication Association convention in San Francisco – where Lance and I got married. I looked at the literal and symbolic power of women wearing pants. I included a story about women’s page editor Marj Paxson who went on to become a publisher of the Muskogee Phoenix in the 1980s. On the first day, she changed the policy for female employees – they could now wear pants. From the paper:She later learned that many of the female employees went shopping that evening. The next day, of the…

    Aileen Ryan information

I just received a wonderful email from the Special Collections folks at Mount Mary College – it included several images regarding Milwaukee Journal women’s editor/fashion editor Aileen Ryan. One of those images is featured above – it is announcement about the Aileen Ryan chair in fashion at the College. I wrote a biographical article about Ryan for the Milwaukee History journal in 2004 – focusing on her role as a fashion journalist. I am now planning on putting together an article that focuses more specifically on how she (and the Journal) represented fashion in Milwaukee in the 1950s and 1960s. During this time, Milwaukee was a big player in U.S.…

    Pants research

This morning I am working on a paper about the debate over women wearing pants. This debate was about more than fashion as pants symbolized the change in women’s roles in society and the fear over that change. I have collected New York Times articles about women wearing pants as I look for themes in that coverage. Some of the articles are in the women’s pages but the story also reached the news sections. In the article above, a judge is critical of a woman who wore pants to traffic court. This paper is part of my research agenda that looks at the four Fs of the women’s pages: family,…
