Women’s History Month: Dorothy Jurney
Day two of Women’s History Month features Dorothy Jurney who was known as the godmother of the women’s pages. She is pictured above without glasses (The woman in the glasses is Marie Anderson – I will blog about her tomorrow.) Jurney was a groundbreaking women’s page editor who encouraged other editors to improve the content of their sections. Like Marjorie who I blogged about yesterday, Dorothy worked on the hard news side during World War II and as forced back to the women’s pages in peacetime. In 1950, she revolutionized the women’s pages of the Miami Herald and mentored Marie Anderson to take her place. Below are some resources about…

Women’s History Month: Marjorie Paxson
In honor of March being Women’s History Month, I will be blogging, pinning and tweeting about a different women’s page editor each day. I thought the best place to start would be with Marjorie Paxson who helped found the National Women and Media Collection. She was a longtime women’s page journalist in Texas and Florida who became the fourth female publisher at Gannett. She worked on the hard news side during World War II and then returned to the women’s pages in peacetime. She worked at women’s pages in Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania. She was a good friend of Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney. Here is a link to the…

Great Image of Food Editor Jeanne Voltz
I love this great image of Food Editor Jeanne Voltz. She is getting ready to fly with USN Blue Angels, Miami, 1956. I noticed the image on her daughter Jeanne’s Facebook page and I appreciate her letting me use it. In the 1950s, Jeanne Voltz was the food editor at the Miami Herald before moving on to the Los Angeles Times in 1960. Here is how she is described in her obituary: “She was one of the first newspaper food editors of the modern era, when the sections were edited by journalists rather than by the advertising department.” There has been an over generalization that food journalism was run by…

Florida Field to Feast Cookbook
Lance got me the cookbook, Field to Feast for Christmas. It is co-authored by Orlando Sentinel food editor Heather McPherson. On the back of the book is a reference to Jeanne Voltz’s Florida Cookbook. Jeanne was the food editor in the women’s pages of the Miami Herald in the 1950s and the food editor in the women’s pages of the Los Angeles Times in the 1960s. Here is my article about Jeanne. This was my first dish from the cookbook – Strawberry Pie. Tonight I am trying the recipe for Baked Penne with Four Cheeses.

NCA Presentations About a Food Editor & an Advice Columnist
Jane nickerson from Kimberly Voss This morning I presented a paper at NCA Convention that Lance and I wrote about the first food editor at the New York Times: Jane Nickerson. The food news ran in the women’s section. Eleanor hart.nca from Kimberly Voss In the afternoon, we presented a paper about Eleanor Hart and her advice column that ran in the Miami Herald in the 1960s. It was named a top paper in its division. It was great to tell the stories of these important but often forgotten women.

Marie Anderson & the Servicemen’s Pier
The Veteran’s Day activities yesterday reminded me of some of the work women’s page journalists did stateside during World War II. Some went over to the news side of the newspaper – examples include Betty Ewing, Koky Dishon, Jeanne Voltz, Marjorie Paxson and Dorothy Jurney. Other women were volunteers for the war effort – such as Marie Anderson, pictured above. She oversaw major projects at the Servicemen’s Pier in Miami. Here is a story about her work in a 1943 Miami News story. I wrote about Marie’s work at the Pier in this book chapter about women in the Baby Boomer generation. After the war, Anderson went to work at…
