Mary Anne Dolan
I am working on a paper about women as newspaper “firsts” – the first female managing editors and publishers. In the 1970s and 1980s, several women who went into management were deemed “firsts.” I am looking to see how they went from the women’s papers into management. My article about one of those women, Carol Sutton, will come out this month. She went from the women’s editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal to the first female managing editor of that newspaper – this promotion earned her nationwide attention. I am beginning to look at the career of Mary Anne Dolan, pictured above. She became the first female managing editor of the…

Jim Bellows quotes
I found this site that sells items with quotes from famous newspaper editor Jim Bellows. Jim was married to women’s page editor Maggie Savoy until her death in 1970. I am hoping to write a conference paper about Jim soon – especially his approach to women in journalism. He had progressive views on women’s news and women in the newsroom. I have several of his letters that I found in archives at the University of Missouri (Penney-Missouri Award papers) and the University of Miami (Papers of Helen Muir). I just ordered a water bottle with one of Jim’s quotes – I am hoping it inspires me to get started on…

Jim Bellows article
I came across this article about legendary editor Jim Bellows joining the L.A. Times. It notes that he will be overseeing the women’s section. He was married to wonderful women’s page editor Maggie Savoy, which is also noted in the article. Maggie would eventually become the women’s editor of the Times until her death in 1970. I am guessing that he also oversaw the food section. I am working on an article about L.A. Times food editor Jeanne Voltz. I am planning on writing an article about Jim Bellows at some point. He was a great supporter of women journalists.

Jim Bellows letters to Helen Muir
I came across these letters from Jim Bellows to Helen Muir in Helen Muir’s papers at the University of Miami. Helen wrote for the women’s page of the Miami News when Jim was an editor at the newspaper. (Helen would go on to be a book editor at the Miami Herald. Jim became a legendary newspaper editor.) The two stayed in touch over the years. Here is a link to a letter than Helen wrote to Jim following the death of his second wife, Maggie Savoy. I am working on collecting information about both Helen and Jim. They were both great journalists and advocates for women in the field.

Helen Muir letter to Jim Bellows
Above is a letter that Miami journalist Helen Muir wrote to Jim Bellows following the death of Jim’s wife Maggie Savoy – a well known women’s page journalist. Helen worked as a women’s page journalist for Jim when he was an editor at the Miami News. The letter can be found in Helen’s papers at the University of Miami. There are several letters back-and-forth over the years.
