    Joan Younger Dickinson article

I received news last week that my article about Joan Younger Dickinson is a revise-and-resubmit for a national journal. There were some great suggestions for revisions. JYD was a women’s page and news reporter for United Press during World War II and then she became a writer for the Ladies Home Journal (pictured above). We went through her papers at the University of Wyoming two years ago.

Joan Younger Dickinson & Walter Cronkite

Television journalism icon Walter Cronkite’s death over the weekend reminded me of his connection to significant women’s page and women’s magazine journalist Joan Younger Dickinson. Joan’s husband, Bill, was Cronkite’s United Press supervisor during World War II. Joan and Walter knew each other so well that he wrote the introduction to her self-published book about her early career, pictured above. I went through Joan’s papers at the University of Wyoming in 2007 and presented a paper about her at the PCA conference last year. My article about Joan is currently under review.

    Our baby & baby books

With a baby on the way, I have been reading women’s page and then women’s magazine writer Joan Younger’s The Stork and You. She wrote the book after she had her daughter Rosalind. The book is much like the popular book What to Expect When You Are Expecting – only written decades earlier. JYD was well ahead of her time. I went through the papers of JYD at the University of Wyoming and am writing am writing an article about her.

    Joan Younger Dickinson’s work

I just received this book, The Stork and You, written by Joan Younger Dickinson. (I tracked it down on Amazon.) The book was an early version of What to Expect When You Are Expecting. JYD had been a wire reporter during World War II and then a staff writer for the Ladies Home Journal. She wrote the book after she had her child Rosalind. I found this copy of the March 1947 Ladies Home Journal on eBay. It includes two long stories by JYD: “The Hard Price of Soft Coal” and “The Volunteer Worker, 1947 Style.” I am continuing to work on article about Joan’s career.

Visiting the Bahamas and Joan Younger Dickinson

Lance and I just returned from a trip to the Bahamas. This photo was taken last Friday. Our visit to the Bahamas was a reminder of women’s page and women’s magazine journalist Joan Younger Dickinson. JYD worked for UPI for many years beginning during World War II. JYD visited the Bahamas to cover the arrival of the Duchess of Windsor – a worldwide news event. In December 1936, King Edward advocated the throne to marry Wallace Simpson. After marriage, the couple became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. After several years in France, the Duke was appointed the governor of the Bahamas during World War II. JYD was one of…
