Catherine East oral history
I recently found an oral history conducted with Catherine East. Catherine was an influential behind-the-scenes government employee who helped improve the media’s coverage of women’s issues. I have gone through her papers at the Schlesinger Library in Boston twice but did not know about the oral history which I just received through ILL. Today I am skimming through the 300+ history looking for media references. On page 199, Catherine mentioned Vera Glaser and Marie Anderson. (Vera was a Washington wire service reporter whose stories ran in the women’s pages. Marie was the women’s page editor at the Miami Herald.) Miami women’s network
Here is a postcard that Miami Herald women’s page editors Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney sent to Miami journalist and library advocate Helen Muir. It can be found in Helen’s papers at the University of Miami. Lance and I went through Helen’s papers a few weeks ago and found some great letters. I am working on an article about Miami women that includes Helen, Marie and Dorothy.

New Marie Willard Anderson image
Over the weekend, I heard from a distant relative of Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson. He had several photos of Anderson’s mother, Marie Willard Anderson. This one was taken in 1908.

Marie Anderson and Paul Myhre
This is a letter from Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson to Paul Myhre, the director of the Penney-Missouri Awards. Paul was a big advocate for women’s page journalism and often worked with Marie. The letter can be found in the Penney-Missouri Award papers at WHMC. The Penney-Missouri Awards were a way for women’s page editors to network. The letter includes a reference to Edee Greene, women’s page editor at the Fort Lauderdale News. I am presenting a paper about Edee at the end of the month.

Marie Anderson and Duke University
This week I received materials from the Duke University Archives about Marie Anderson. (She’s an alum.) One of the pages shows that Marie spoke at an alumni event in May/June 1972 about her experiences as a woman journalist. Marie earned a degree in English – she received her journalism training from Dorothy Jurney.

Marie Anderson with Hugh Hefner
I recently found this image of Hugh Hefner visiting the Miami Press Club sometime in the 1960s. That’s the Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson sitting with him. (I’ve circled her.) I published an article about Marie in Spring 2007.
