A Visit to the Kennedy Space Center
We visited the Kennedy Space Center this weekend. When the space work in Cape Canaveral first started, Miami Herald women’s page reporter Roberta Applegate wrote a 5-part series on the women who worked for NASA.

Happy Archive Month!
October is National Archive Month. I love archives – which we visit as often as we can. Our favorite is the National Women & Media Collection in Missouri. I am writing an article about my discoveries there for the 25th anniversary of the Collection. The NWMC was started by women’s page editor turned publisher Marjorie Paxson. Other women’s page journalists whose papers are at the NWMC include Marie Anderson, Roberta Applegate, Gloria Biggs, Eleni Epstein and Dorothy Jurney. And, most helpful of all are the papers of the Penney-Missouri Awards – the top recognition for women’s pages in the 1960s.

Women’s Page Editor Margaret Miller
I was pleased to get a lovely email yesterday and to learn about women’s page journalist Margaret Miller. She was an Associated Press reporter from 1944 to 1952 before taking time off to raise her children. She returned to newspapering in Detroit in 1967 as the editor of the women’s section – that would then be called “Suburban Life.” Here is a great column about Margaret and her influence. I liked this: “Margaret was a pragmatist, but one who was skillful in moving business forward whether it be in the day-to-day tasks of getting out the newspaper or in edging forward women’s equality in the workplace.” I also liked the…

Mitt Romney’s Father George Romney
With GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in the news, I have been reminded of his father George Romney. He was a governor of Michigan in the 1960s and also worked at HUD. Women’s page journalist Roberta “Bobbi” Applegate’s brother Albert Applegate worked for George Romney. (Bobbi Applegate was the first woman to work as a governor’s press secretary – for Michigan Governor Kim Sigler – before moving on to become the club reporter for the women’s pages of the Miami Herald. My article about her appeared in a 2008 issue of Michigan History Magazine.) Also in 2008, I nominated and helped to induct Roberta into the Michigan Journalism Hall of…

Saving the Miami Herald Building
Yesterday, the Miami Herald featured this story about a preservation group’s fight to save the Miami Herald Building. Marie Anderson was the women’s page editor of the Herald when the building opened in 1963. The Miami Herald had one of the top women’s page sections in the country in the 1950s and 1960s. Journalists who wrote for the section at the time included: Roberta Applegate, Dorothy Jurney, Marjorie Paxson and Jeanne Voltz.

Roberta Applegate and the Miami Herald
Today I am going through some papers of Roberta Applegate that are house in the National Women and Media Collection. I have examined Roberta’s work as a women’s page journalist in Michigan but have not looked as closely at her work at the Miami Herald. She was the club editor for the women’s pages during the 1960s. This was at a time when there hundreds of women’s clubs in Miami. She worked for legendary women’s editor Marie Anderson. – Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
