    Ruthe Deskin images

I am collecting images to be used with my article about Las Vegas journalist Ruthe Deskin. The article should run sometime in the next few months. This ad can be found in Ruthe’s papers at the UNLV. We went through the papers a few years ago. I am still looking for details about this image of Ruthe with Ann Landers.

    Ruthe Deskin & Harry Reid

The New York Times had an interesting story this weekend about Senate majority leader Harry Reid – Democrat of Nevada. Here is a link. Las Vegas journalist (and previous Reno women’s page editor) Ruthe Deskin often covered Reid. She had known him since his high schoo years. In fact, when Ruthe questioned some of Reid’s practices a few years ago, he immediately released more documents although it was not required. He made a statement noting that he did not want to disappoint Ruthe. My article about Ruthe is coming out soon in a state history journal. It is based on her papers at UNLV.

Lance and I just watched the movie, The Hoax, about the fake biography of Howard Hughes. The story reminded me of Las Vegas Sun journalist Ruthe Deskin. More Ruthe Deskin revisions

Lance & I finished the final revisions/edits on our Ruthe Deskin manuscript to send back to a history journal. It’s a much stronger piece now. It was intimidating to write about such a Nevada journalism legend but I think we did her justice. UPDATE: I have heard from the journal editor and only minor changes remain at this point. I am happy that Ruthe’s story will be told. She brought real class to Las Vegas – a place Lance & I love to visit. UPDATE II: The revisions have been made and the article has been accepted.

    Ruthe Deskin submission

My article about Ruthe Deskin, longtime Las Vegas journalist, is now under review at a historical journal. Ruthe made a significant difference in her city and provided a stabilizing voice to the maverick publisher Hank Greenspun. (Ruthe is pictured here with Hank.) I went through Ruthe’s papers at UNLV and viewed the videotaped oral history that her family recorded. Here is my earlier post about my research on Ruthe.
