Dedication of the Vivian Castleberry Peace Institute

We just returned from our trip to Dallas. We were able to watch the dedication of the Vivian Castleberry Peace Institute at the University of North Texas. (Vivian was the longtime women’s page editor of the Dallas Times Herald.) Here is an article about it. It was a great ceremony. On one wall were murals that elementary students created of Vivian.

    Women’s Equality Day March

Yesterday was Women’s Equality Day – the 90th Anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. I took part in the UCF march honoring the day. Several female lawmakers spoke at the event. She also was a copy editor of President Ford’s Commission on the Status of Women report, “To Form a More Perfect Union.” The main editor of the report, “To Form a More Perfect Union,” was Dorothy Jurney. Dorothy was women’s page editor of the Miami Herald and…

Peggy was a women’s page reporter for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel in the 1950s and 1960s. She became the food editor of the section in 1968 and remained in the position for two decades. It was interesting to learn more about Peggy. In addition, her thesis was helpful in learning more about women’s sections at the time. Peggy surveyed three of the women’s page editors I have studied: Marie Anderson, Gloria Biggs and Dorothy Jurney. Peggy also interviewed her boss, Aileen Ryan – another research subject. Her research…
