Food Editors’ Favorites: Treasured Recipes
I found this 1983 book, Food Editors’ Favorites: Treasured Recipes, at the local Goodwill. It was a fundraising cookbook for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Newspaper food editors from across the country contributed recipes. While my book looks at newspaper food journalism from 1942 through 1975, several of the food editors I studied are in this book. Milwaukee Journal food editor Peggy Daum: “This curry dip served with vegetables has become my price of admission to many friends’ parties.” (p 17) Plain Dealer food editor Janet Beighle French: “This antipasto has earned a permanent place at my annual Christmas bash – a snack buffet for about 100 people.” (p 27) Minneapolis…

Women & Food Symposium
I enjoyed speaking at the Women & Food Symposium on Saturday. It was held at the University of Texas while I pitched in remotely. (That’s me on the big screen.) I spoke on the panel:Food Writing in the Age of New Media. I loved that there was so much social media during the event, such as the Tweets above. Here is a Storify of the social media about the event.

Montana Book & Women’s Page Editor Beverley Morales
I was so excited to learn about the book, Montana Stirrups, Sage and Shenanigans: Western Ranch Life in a Forgotten Era. It was written by sisters Francie Brink Berg, Anne Brink Sallgren Krickel & Jeanie Brink Thiessen. I communicated with all three women in my research about their sister, Beverley Brink Morales. Beverley was a women’s page editor in Florida and Ohio who won Penney-Missouri Awards. I presented a paper about her work in Florida a few years ago. The book includes some great information and images of Beverley. I especially loved the image of her with her bees on page 343. After graduating from college, she worked as the…

New York City Culinary Conversation of James Beard, Jane Nickerson, and Cecily Brownstone
My article “Dining Out: New York City Culinary Conversation of James Beard, Jane Nickerson, and Cecily Brownstone,” has been accepted for publication in NYFoodStory which is produced by the Culinary Historians of New York. In the late 1940s and for much of the 1950s, Jane Nickerson was the food editor of the New York Times . Although she has been largely overshadowed by Craig Claiborne, she was a formidable force in the New York food community. She reviewed many of the city’s restaurants, up to 21,000 in 1949. Often, her dinner companions were food writers James Beard and Cecily Brownstone. In fact, Nickerson introduced the culinary pair who would speak…

Ruthe Deskin Article is Out
I am happy to report that the article Lance & I wrote about Ruthe Deskin is finally out. We got a copy over the weekend. “Where She Stands: Ruthe Deskin and the Las Vegas Sun” is in the 2012 issue Nevada Historical Society Quarterly. Ruthe Deskin was an influential Las Vegas journalist. After working as a women’s page journalist in Reno, she came to the Las Vegas Sun in June 1954 as the Sunday Editor. She remained at the newspaper for decades. Much of that time she served as an assistant to the flamboyant publisher Hank Greenspun. She did a little of everything in this position, including a regular column.…
