    Miami women’s network

Here is a postcard that Miami Herald women’s page editors Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney sent to Miami journalist and library advocate Helen Muir. It can be found in Helen’s papers at the University of Miami. Lance and I went through Helen’s papers a few weeks ago and found some great letters. I am working on an article about Miami women that includes Helen, Marie and Dorothy.

    Eleni Epstein revisions

This morning I am working on revisions for an R&R on my Eleni Epstein article for a state history journal. Eleni was the longtime fashion editor of the Washington Star. She won a Penney-Missouri Award in 1960. We went through Eleni’s papers several times at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection and found several references to Eleni on a trip to the Special Collections of the New York Public Library. I have some great images of Eleni -a fashionable woman in her own right. UPDATE: I just found some new letters written by Eleni in an archives at the Brooklyn Museum. I have ordered copies and should get them soon.

    Helen Muir photos

We spent last Friday going through Helen Muir’s papers at the University of Miami. She was a Miami News and Herald reporter in the 1950s and 1960s. She was a friend of other women’s page journalists Marie Anderson, Dorothy Jurney and Jeanne Voltz. This is a photo of Helen with her daughters. (It can be found in Helen’s papers.) It was the car accident death of her youngest daughter who led Helen to champion libraries. For Helen, it was a memorial for her daughter. I am exploring Helen’s methods of advocacy for libraries and her work as a journalist in Miami. Helen was also a good friend of Marjory Stoneman…

    Roxcy Bolton House

Lance and I spent last weekend in beautiful Coral Gables. On Friday we went through the papers of Helen Muir at the University of Miami. We were happy to discover folders about several of the people we study: Jim Bellows, Dorothy Jurney and Jeanne Voltz. We found interesting information about the state of Florida journalism and the role of women. We also found evidence of great friendships. After our archiving, we visited the Roxcy Bolton House which is near the campus. (That’s a photo of the visit above – I’m 6 months pregnant with Curtis James.) Roxcy worked with the Miami women journalists as an early feminist leader. For example,…

    Dorothy Jurney publication

Yesterday I went over the final revisions on my Dorothy Jurney article with the journal article – it has officially been accepted for publication. It will appear in April 2010. Dorothy was known as the godmother of women’s pages. She helped transform women’s sections at several newspapers including the Miami Herald and the Detroit Free Press. I am happy that Jurney’s story will be told. She is the 12th women’s page editor whose story I/we have published.
