One year in Florida
A year ago today we arrived in Orlando from St. Louis – our home for the previous five years. While here, we have continued to study women’s page editors. In the past year, we have visited three archives in Florida to collect materials: University of Miami, South Florida History Museum and the University of South Florida. A true highlight of the past year was getting to speak to the daughters of several women’s page editors: Carol Sutton’s two daughters, Edee Green’s daughter Helen and Jeanne Voltz’s daughter, Jeanne. (Few women’s page journalists had children, but if they did, it was usually daughters.) The more we learn about these women and…

Julie and Julia
We went to see the movie, Julie and Julia, yesterday. (The movie was much better than the book.) This 1978 image of Julia Child is from the Chicago Tribune photo archives. Here is the story. Helen Thomas’ Birthday
This week was Helen Thomas’ 89th Birthday. Helen was a good friend of Washington Star women’s page fashion Eleni Epstein. Here is an earlier entry on the friendship between the two women. (I am completing an R&R on an article about Eleni.) Helen celebrated her birthday with President Obama – he turned 48 on the same day. Here’s an article about the two sharing cupcakes.

Helen Muir’s house
When we were in Coral Gables two weeks ago to go through journalist Helen Muir’s papers at the University of Miami, we went by Helen’s home. She lived near environmental great Marjory Stoneman Douglas. They were a fun pair. Helen wrote for both the Miami News and the Miami Herald women’s sections. I am going to work on drafting a paper on Helen on Friday.

Helen Muir letter to Jim Bellows
Above is a letter that Miami journalist Helen Muir wrote to Jim Bellows following the death of Jim’s wife Maggie Savoy – a well known women’s page journalist. Helen worked as a women’s page journalist for Jim when he was an editor at the Miami News. The letter can be found in Helen’s papers at the University of Miami. There are several letters back-and-forth over the years.
