Penney-Missouri Awards Workshop
I recently found this clip from the Penney-Missouri Awards Workshop. It includes many of the women who I have studied, such as Marie Anderson, Maggie Savoy, Dorothy Jurney and Beverley Morales. Also included in the photo is Fort Lauderdale women’s page editor Edee Greene. I am presenting a paper about Edee at a conference this weekend. Here is a link to the conference program.

Jeanne Voltz and James Beard
Women’s page journalist and food editor Jeanne Voltz (of the Miami Herald and then Los Angeles Times) is mentioned several times in this biography of food great James Beard. The two were good friends. I am working on a book chapter about Jeanne and a biographical sketch of James.

Helen Muir image
I just found this image of Miami journalist Helen Muir. (It’s in the Florida Photographic Collection.) I learned last week that Helen was Dorothy Jurney’s initial boss in the women’s at the Miami News before she left for Washington. Helen held an annual party for Dorothy after she left for Detroit. I am working on a revise and resubmit of Dorothy’s career. I plan to go through the papers of Helen Muir at the University of Miami in the future. Here is a link about her papers.
