Tampa Bay History Center Visit
We had a wonderful visit to the Tampa Bay History Center to celebrate Lance’s new job at the University of Tampa. We started with a visit to acclaimed restaurant Columbia Cafe. I had the “1905 Salad” which was wonderful. I loved the exhibits that focused on social history, such at the Tampa Woman’s Club. Women’s organizations have helped build the foundations of communities including fundraisers for libraries, schools and hospitals. These activities were covered by the women’s pages of newspapers. Another great example was about a Tampa Department Store, Maas Brothers. Lance & I have an article coming out in the Tampa Bay History Journal this year about women’s page…

Women’s History Month: Anne Rowe Goldman
Day 24 of Women’s History Month features Anne Rowe Goldman from the St. Pete Times. A New Jersey native, Anne Rowe moved to St. Petersburg at a young age. Three days after she graduated from St. Petersburg High School, she began working at the library of the St. Petersburg Times. It was the 1950s and she was only 17 years old. During the next 12 years, she was a copy editor, women’s editor of the St. Petersburg Times and then women’s editor of the St. Petersburg Evening Independent. She won three Penney-Missouri Awards – the top national recognition for women’s pages. In 1966, she was promoted to the Times as…

Eugene Patterson Has Died
Eugene Patterson died yesterday. According to his obit: “He wrote about the civil rights movement at a time when many Southern newspapers were reluctant to cover it.” He headed the St. Pete Times (now the Tampa Bay Times)in the years when former women’s page editor Anne Rowe Goldman served as ombudsman. Here is a link to a story about Patterson naming Goldman to her position. Several Southern newspapers were champions of civil rights but overlooked inequities that women faced – including in the newsroom. There is a comment in the book Orange Journalism which noted that Goldman should have promoted higher but was not because she was a woman.

Talk at Urban Rethink
I enjoyed speaking about Florida women’s page editors and their role in building community at Urban ReThink on Tuesday night. I spoke about Marie Anderson and Roberta Applegate from the Miami Herald; Anne Rowe from the St. Petersburg Times and Edee Greene from the Fort Lauderdale News. A highlight of the experience was speaking with Edee’s grandson Patrick. Here is a link to my PowerPoint from the talk.

It was during that visit that Elvis was interviewed by St. Petersburg Times women’s page reporter Anne Rowe. Here is the resulting story. The interview was mentioned in her obituary.

The St. Petersburg Times, Anne Rowe and DAY
I am finishing up a paper about the elimination of the women’s pages and the introduction of a newsfeature section at the St. Petersburg Times in 1969. It was overseen by Anne Rowe – pictured above. (Her work is often overshadowed by Ben Bradlee’s work creating a Style section at the Washington Post which predated the change at the Times by a few months.) It was the beginning of change for women in journalism and Rowe deserves more credit. This is how the paper begins: It was April 1964 and five young journalists from St. Petersburg were gathered in a hotel room on the Gulf Beaches. Known as the…
