New Carol Sutton image
I just found this new image of Kentucky women’s page editor and M.E. Carol Sutton. It can be found on the site of the League of Women Voters of Louisville. I’m pleased that there is also a link on the site to this blog. I received emails from both of Carol’s daughters this summer. Not too many women’s page editors had children so it’s nice to have a chance to hear more about “mom.” My article about Carol is scheduled to come out next year.

The Kentucky Derby & Koky Dishon & Carol Sutton
My women’s page journalists have at least two connections to the Kentucky Derby. The first relates to Jim Squires, pictured here, editor of the Chicago Tribune in the 1980s. Jim’s papers are at Vanderbilt University and include several letters between Jim and Koky. My article about Koky comes out soon in a regional history journal. Carol Sutton reference
There’s an article in the Louisville Courier-Journal today about a restaurant closing that features a reference to Carol Sutton:“For women and African Americans, however, it was another story. Mazzoni’s desegregated earlier than other restaurants, but like the rest of Louisville it was in its earlier days for whites only. And women, by the way, didn’t gain the right to drink at Louisville’s bars until the early 1970s. I well remember accompanying a group of women from the newspaper, including the legendary editor Carol Sutton, to Mazzoni’s at noon after the Board of Aldermen approved the ordinance allowing women to stand at the bar and drink like men. Carol took pleasure…

Carol Sutton interview with Mary Bobo
My article about Louisville women’s page editor, and later managing editor, Carol Sutton has been revised and resubmitted to a national journalism history journal. Carol was one of Time’s Women of the Year when she became the first female managing editor of a metro daily. That’s her in the bottom right corner in yellow. The photo was taken on the balcony of a hotel in Mexico. Here’s chance to hear from Carol Sutton:http://www.archive.org/details/CarolSuttonInterviewWithMaryBobo
