Women’s History Month: Day 14 & Women Politicking Politely Book
I am excited to share the cover of my upcoming book, Women Politicking Politely. It comes out next month. This book includes the relatively unknown stories of six important women who laid the foundation for improving women’s equality in the U.S. While they largely worked behind the scenes, they made a significant impact. In the group are two female political operatives who worked behind the scenes along with four female journalists who also occasionally worked within government to advance women’s rights during the 1950s through the 1970s. Much of it centers on Washington, D.C., as well as the more unlikely cities of Madison, Wisconsin and Miami, Florida. It includes the…

Women’s History Month, Day 8: Dorothy Jurney
Day eight of Women’s History Month features Dorothy Jurney who was known as the godmother of the women’s pages. She is pictured above without glasses (The woman in the glasses is Marie Anderson – I will blog about her tomorrow.) Jurney was a groundbreaking women’s page editor who encouraged other editors to improve the content of their sections. Dorothy worked on the hard news side during World War II and as forced back to the women’s pages in peacetime. In 1950, she revolutionized the women’s pages of the Miami Herald and mentored Marie Anderson to take her place. Below are some resources about Jurney: Her papers are at the National…

American Women on the Move: Book about IWY
I enjoyed reading this excellent book, American Women on the Move: The Inside Story of the National Women’s Conference, 1977. There is some overlap with my book, Politicking Politely. There are great stories about Catherine East, Dorothy Jurney and Kay Clarenbach.

My Upcoming Book: Politicking Politely & Well-Behaved Women
I am finishing up the edits on my upcoming book, Politicking Politely: Well-Behaved Women Making a Difference in the 1960s and 1970s. My book focuses on 6 significant women. It includes the relatively unknown stories of two female political operatives who worked behind the scenes along with four female journalists who also occasionally worked within government to advance women’s rights during the 1950s through the 1970s. Much of it centers on Washington, D.C., as well as the more unlikely cities of Madison, Wisconsin, and Miami, Florida. It includes the story of a women’s page journalist who published an official government report in her newspaper section when the White House refused…

Miami Food & Helen Muir’s Tea Parties
In writing the Miami food book, I am including a section on Helen Muir’s famous tea parties. She was a writer for the women’s section of the Miami News and the Miami Herald and she also was a book editor. Women’s page journalists Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney are included in this photo.
