Florida ERA fight & the media
My article about the fight for/against the Equal Rights Amendment in Florida and how newspapers covered the issue is in its final stage. (Most of the articles ran after the women’s pages were eliminated.) The article has been accepted and we’re currently going over images to run with the article. The images above include several options that are being considered.

Helen Muir’s house
When we were in Coral Gables two weeks ago to go through journalist Helen Muir’s papers at the University of Miami, we went by Helen’s home. She lived near environmental great Marjory Stoneman Douglas. They were a fun pair. Helen wrote for both the Miami News and the Miami Herald women’s sections. I am going to work on drafting a paper on Helen on Friday.

Helen Muir letter to Jim Bellows
Above is a letter that Miami journalist Helen Muir wrote to Jim Bellows following the death of Jim’s wife Maggie Savoy – a well known women’s page journalist. Helen worked as a women’s page journalist for Jim when he was an editor at the Miami News. The letter can be found in Helen’s papers at the University of Miami. There are several letters back-and-forth over the years.

Miami women’s network
Here is a postcard that Miami Herald women’s page editors Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney sent to Miami journalist and library advocate Helen Muir. It can be found in Helen’s papers at the University of Miami. Lance and I went through Helen’s papers a few weeks ago and found some great letters. I am working on an article about Miami women that includes Helen, Marie and Dorothy.

Helen Muir photos

She was a friend of other women’s page journalists Marie Anderson, Dorothy Jurney and Jeanne Voltz. This is a photo of Helen with her daughters. (It can be found in Helen’s papers.) It was the car accident death of her youngest daughter who led Helen to champion libraries. For Helen, it was a memorial for her daughter. I am exploring Helen’s methods of advocacy for libraries and her work as a journalist in Miami. Helen was also a good friend of Marjory Stoneman…

Roxcy Bolton House
Lance and I spent last weekend in beautiful Coral Gables. On Friday we went through the papers of Helen Muir at the University of Miami. We were happy to discover folders about several of the people we study: Jim Bellows, Dorothy Jurney and Jeanne Voltz. We found interesting information about the state of Florida journalism and the role of women. We also found evidence of great friendships. After our archiving, we visited the Roxcy Bolton House which is near the campus. (That’s a photo of the visit above – I’m 6 months pregnant with Curtis James.) Roxcy worked with the Miami women journalists as an early feminist leader. For example,…
