I was happy to find this reference to Billie O’Day as a symphony conductor. Her daytime job was the women’s page editor at the Miami News. I am speaking about O’Day at the upcoming Florida Conference of Historians.

The Florida Conference of Historian program is out. I am happy to be speaking about Miami News women’s page editor Billie O’Day. This is from her obituary: “Summing herself up in her notes, Billie O’Day wrote: “I believed Anita Hill. My favorite TV shows are ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ ‘Brooklyn Bridge,’ ‘Murder She Wrote,’ ‘The Civil War,’ and any other documentary by Ken Burns.“I watch CNN and C-Span. I go to lunch every day with my next-door neighbor, a Juilliard grad and a terrific vocalist and pianist. I don’t go out at night.’’

New Directions in Florida’s African American History
I am excited that my paper NAME has been accepted for presentation at the conference “New Directions in Florida’s African American History,” at Flagler College, March 23-25, 2017, Saint Augustine, Florida. I have addressed the women’s page coverage of black brides in a journal article and the book, When Private Talk Goes Public.

Researching Kathryn Robinette
I am beginning a a potential new journal article about Palm Beach women’s page editor Kathryn Robinette who won two Penney-Missouri Awards, the top recognition for women’s pages in the 1960s. Robinette earned an undergraduate degree and then a master’s degree in English from the University of Chicago before trying women’s page journalism at the Georgia newspaper Morning News and Evening Press in 1960. She wrote of the experience: “I typed weddings and all that tiresome stuff but managed to fall in love with the work anyway. I also formed firm opinions about what type of story best served the reader’s interest – having been one for so long.” In…
