Remembering New York Times Food Editor Jane Nickerson
Craig Claiborne gets a lot of attention but it was Jane Nickerson who was the first food editor of the New York Times, from 1942 to 1957. She was a significant journalist who wrote about food as rationing changed cooking and post-World War II technology changed the food on our store shelves. She also reviewed restaurants, while also writing about both famous chefs and home cooks. I am not alone in recognizing Jane’s significance. Culinary historian Anne Mendelson wrote about Jane’s work in this article. Jeanne Voltz & the Southern Foodways Alliance
Last week I joined the Southern Foodways Alliance in honor of newspaper food editor Jeanne Voltz. Here is information about Jeanne Voltz’s role in the organization:“The Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi agreed to act as the incubator of the SFA and provided start-up capital, earned from sale of the Center-researched and written cookbook, A Gracious Plenty: Recipes and Recollections from the American South. BBQ & Remembering Jeanne Voltz
I was shocked to see that Miami Herald and Los Angeles Times food editor Jeanne Voltz was not included in this book about the history of BBQ. Voltz’s story is worth recognizing as her impact lingers. Today, Voltz’s recipe for Green Corn Tamales can be found on the Food Network website with a note giving credit to her acclaimed book, Barbecued Ribs, Smoked Butts, and Other Great Feeds. James Beard wrote of that book, “Jeanne Voltz has written a definitive book on barbecuing. She understands the varying tastes and the techniques of each region she covers and this is THE book on barbecue.” Here is a great story about Voltz…
