Great reporting on food history
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a great article about food history today. Here is a link to it. I am working on a conference paper about food sections in newspapers. (These sections originated in women’s pages.) I am focusing on the work of Jeanne Voltz at the Los Angeles Times.

James Beard House
Here is a tour of James Beard’s house. Miami Herald and Los Angeles Times food journalist Jeanne Voltz was a friend of Beard and often cooked for him. (Jeanne was a journalist who used her reporting skills to become a great food writer after getting her start under women’s page journalist Dorothy Jurney.) I am working a biographical article about Beard for the book, Icons of American Cooking. He was an amazing man with respect for food sections that started in the women’s pages.

Jeanne Voltz and BBQ
Lance is BBQing his way through the Jeanne Voltz book: Barbecued Ribs, Smoked Butts and Other Great Feeds. Food great James Beard wrote of it: “Jeanne Voltz has written a definitive book on barbecuing.” Jeanne started her food journalism career in the 1950s women’s section of the Miami Herald, working for Dorothy Jurney. I am working on a biography chapter of Jeanne and her work at the Los Angeles Times for a book about culinary history.

James Beard article
I just signed a contract with ABC-CLIO for a chapter on cooking great James Beard. He was a good friend of women’s page food journalist Jeanne Voltz. James would often go to dinner at Jeanne’s house where she would cook for him. She started as a journalist at the Miami Herald who learned about food over the years and eventually became an expert. Part of my research focuses on the examination of the four Fs of the women’s pages: family, fashion, food and furnishings.

Easter cooking & women’s page food editor
Lance & I are cooking a big Easter dinner. We typically draw from the recipes of Jeanne Voltz, who was the food editor at the Miami Herald and the Los Angeles Times. Jeanne Voltz was a good friend of the great James Beard. She used to make dinner for him at her house which seems amazing. I am working on a chapter about James Beard for a book about Cooking Icons.

Jeanne Voltz and James Beard
Women’s page journalist and food editor Jeanne Voltz (of the Miami Herald and then Los Angeles Times) is mentioned several times in this biography of food great James Beard. The two were good friends. I am working on a book chapter about Jeanne and a biographical sketch of James.
