Happy Mother’s Day
Several women’s page journalists were mothers, including Vivian Castleberry, Edee Greene, Jane Nickerson and Dorothee Polson. They each had at least three children while also working as journalists. This was at a time when there was no daycare or maternity leave. These women had to pave their own ways as working mothers. A special recognition of my favorite toddler who loves pudding. He is taking his mother to the beach today. Happy Mother’s Day!

Easter, Jane Nickerson and key lime pie
I recently tracked down a copy of Jane Nickerson’s 1973 Florida Cookbook. Jane was a longtime New York Times food writer before coming down to Florida and later working for the NYT’s Florida newspapers. Her book includes an interesting history of Florida food. I asked Lance to make Jane’s recipes for key lime pie for Easter dinner – it’s pictured above. Yum!

Researching Jane Nickerson Steinberg
I had the wonderful experience this week of speaking to the daughter of Jane Nickerson Steinberg and exchanging emails with her son. So few of the women I study had children so those experiences are quite special. Jane Nickerson (the name she wrote under) was a longtime food editor at the New York Times but has been overshadowed by Craig Claiborne. Yet, Jane’s work was significant. She wrote wrote about food as news – especially coming out of World War II and the end of rationing. One of my great UCF students will be working with me this summer collecting and analyzing Jane’s work at the New York Times.
