Marie Anderson & the Servicemen’s Pier
The Veteran’s Day activities yesterday reminded me of some of the work women’s page journalists did stateside during World War II. Some went over to the news side of the newspaper – examples include Betty Ewing, Koky Dishon, Jeanne Voltz, Marjorie Paxson and Dorothy Jurney. Other women were volunteers for the war effort – such as Marie Anderson, pictured above. She oversaw major projects at the Servicemen’s Pier in Miami. Here is a story about her work in a 1943 Miami News story. I wrote about Marie’s work at the Pier in this book chapter about women in the Baby Boomer generation. After the war, Anderson went to work at…

Jeanne Voltz reference
I was reading through the Recipe Writer’s Handbook when I came across a quote by Miami Herald and L.A. Times food editor Jeanne Voltz: “A good recipe suits the reader to the time, the place and the ingredients; it suits the reader’s skill or will to cook; and its taste meets acceptance by his or her family and guests. A good recipe is a commonsense solution to a reader’s need for food and sustenance.” (p. 190) I plan to interview one of the authors of this book for my work on newspaper food editors.

Marjorie, who helped established the NWMC, was a longtime women’s page editor before becoming a newspaper publisher. That is a drawing of her above and a card signed by her friends and colleagues at the Miami Herald as she was leaving for the St. Petersburg Times. There are also great photos of her going away party – including one image of Marj with women’s page pioneer Marie Anderson. In some ways it was bittersweet to see the images. Marjorie looks so…

Saving the Miami Herald Building
Yesterday, the Miami Herald featured this story about a preservation group’s fight to save the Miami Herald Building. Marie Anderson was the women’s page editor of the Herald when the building opened in 1963. The Miami Herald had one of the top women’s page sections in the country in the 1950s and 1960s. Journalists who wrote for the section at the time included: Roberta Applegate, Dorothy Jurney, Marjorie Paxson and Jeanne Voltz.

Icons of American Cooking book chapter
My book chapter (along with Victor W. Geraci) in the Icons of American Cooking has been published. I just received it in the mail. In the chapter about James Beard, I included an article that Los Angeles Times food editor Jeanne Voltz wrote about the food great. I am revising an article about Voltz and her influence in the food journalism in the women’s pages.
