Women’s Pages & Florida Food History
Lance are going to hear my favorite Florida historian tonight – Gary Mormino. He is going to speak about one of my favorite topics – the history of food in Florida. The event is being held at the Orange County History Center. Florida newspapers have had some great food editors over the years. Jeanne Voltz was the food editor at the Miami Herald during the 1950s and traveled the state looking for food stories. After being the first food editor at the New York Times, Jane Nickerson went on to be the food editor at the Lakeland Ledger. Ruth Gray was the food editor at the St. Petersburg Times who…

Women’s History Month: Jeanne Voltz
Day seven of Women’s History Month features my final Miami Herald women’s page journalist: food editor Jeanne Voltz. Here is a link to my article about Voltz’s career at the Los Angeles Times where she went after many years at the Herald. Like several food editors, Voltz wrote several cookbooks – including one of my favorites, The Florida Cookbook. Today, Voltz’s recipe for Green Corn Tamales can be found on the Food Network website with a note giving credit to her acclaimed book, Barbecued Ribs, Smoked Butts, and Other Great Feeds. James Beard, a well-known name in food and a contemporary of Julia Child, wrote of the book, “Jeanne Voltz…

Great Image of Food Editor Jeanne Voltz
I love this great image of Food Editor Jeanne Voltz. She is getting ready to fly with USN Blue Angels, Miami, 1956. I noticed the image on her daughter Jeanne’s Facebook page and I appreciate her letting me use it. In the 1950s, Jeanne Voltz was the food editor at the Miami Herald before moving on to the Los Angeles Times in 1960. Here is how she is described in her obituary: “She was one of the first newspaper food editors of the modern era, when the sections were edited by journalists rather than by the advertising department.” There has been an over generalization that food journalism was run by…

Florida Field to Feast Cookbook
Lance got me the cookbook, Field to Feast for Christmas. It is co-authored by Orlando Sentinel food editor Heather McPherson. On the back of the book is a reference to Jeanne Voltz’s Florida Cookbook. Jeanne was the food editor in the women’s pages of the Miami Herald in the 1950s and the food editor in the women’s pages of the Los Angeles Times in the 1960s. Here is my article about Jeanne. This was my first dish from the cookbook – Strawberry Pie. Tonight I am trying the recipe for Baked Penne with Four Cheeses.

Newspaper Cookbooks: Day 2
The pair of cookbooks I would add to the list of top newspaper editor cookbooks include two from the Los Angeles Times. The first is the California Cookbook written by the 1960s L.A. Times food editor Jeanne Voltz. Here is a nice blog post about Jeanne. The second is Dear S.O.S. which details thirty years of recipes requests from readers. Recipe requests were an early form of social media.

Newspaper Cookbooks: Day 1
I was pleased to see Marion Nestle’s blog post about the cookbook above that I posted about a few weeks ago. The book includes Cecily Brownstone’s Associated Press Cookbook. The 101 Classic Cookbooks is an excellent resource for both recipes and cookbook history. Each day this week, I am going to blog about the cookbooks that newspaper food editors wrote or edited that I would add to the list. Today, I will address Florida cookbooks. I would add two: Jane Nickerson’s Florida Cookbook and Jeanne Voltz’s The Florida Cookbook: From Gulf Coast Gumbo to Key Lime Pie. Jane’s book was published in 1973 by the University Press of Florida. She…
