    Jim Bellows dies

I was so sad to learn yesterday that Jim Bellows had died. Here’s a link to one of several obits. Jim was a great editor. A great champion for the underdog. An advocate and mentor for women journalists. He was married to women’s page journalist Maggie Savoy until her death in 1970. He made a real difference. I interviewed him a few years ago about Maggie. Here’s a link to an obit that mentions Maggie.

    Jim Bellows’s nephew

Editor & Publisher has named the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Marty Kaiser the editor of the year. It’s really a great newspaper. (Milwaukee is my hometown.) Marty is the nephew of Jim Bellows. He went along with Los Angeles Times women’s page editor Maggie Savoy (Jim’s wife) when she covered the 1968 convention in Chicago. The story is in Jim’s book, The Last Editor. Much of the book is available through Google books. My article about Maggie comes out in March.

    Jim Bellows documentary

I am working on tracking down the documentary The Last Editor based on the book by the same name about Jim Bellows. He was married to women’s page editor Maggie Savoy. A chapter in the book is devoted to Maggie. I’ve tried ILL, the national PBS folks and the local PBS affiliate but I have not been able to track it down. Here’s a great blog entry about Jim. This is a photo of Jim with Mary Anne Dolan.

Maggie Savoy, Jim Bellows and Paul Myhre

This letter is from Jim Bellows (Maggie Savoy’s husband) to Paul Myhre, director of the Penney-Missouri Awards. The joking reference to Mary (Paul’s wife) is about the fact that Maggie was recently hired by the L.A. Times. Jim, Maggie and Paul often wrote letters back and forth to each other through the 1960s until Maggie’s death in 1970. Paul died in 1971. The letters showed humor, activism and journalism. The letter can be found in the unprocessed Penney-Missouri Awards papers at the WHMC at the University of Missouri

    Bellows, Voltz and Christmas

For Christmas, Lance got me the book, 80:Our Most Famous 80 Year Olds. It is edited by Jim Bellows. Jim was a great editor at several major dailies, including the New York Herald Tribune and the Washington Star. Jim was an advocate for women at the newspapers he oversaw. He was married to influential women’s page editor Maggie Savoy. (There’s a chapter devoted to Maggie in the book shown in this post, The Last Editor.) Here’s a link to an interview with Jim. Here’s another interview link. Lance and I are working on a paper about Jim and other progressive male editors. Lance and I have spent the last two…
