    Jim Bellows article

I came across this article about legendary editor Jim Bellows joining the L.A. Times. It notes that he will be overseeing the women’s section. He was married to wonderful women’s page editor Maggie Savoy, which is also noted in the article. Maggie would eventually become the women’s editor of the Times until her death in 1970. I am guessing that he also oversaw the food section. I am working on an article about L.A. Times food editor Jeanne Voltz. I am planning on writing an article about Jim Bellows at some point. He was a great supporter of women journalists.

    Maggie Savoy reference

I found this article announcing that women’s page editor Maggie Savoy is going to join the Los Angeles Times. It’s interesting that she is listed as “Miss Savoy” because she had been married for several years to Jim Bellows – an editor at the L.A. Times. At one point, Maggie was publishing under the byline “Maggie Bellows.” My article about Maggie came out earlier this year. Our son’s middle name is James in honor of Bellows.

    Los Angeles Times

PBS is playing this documentary about the Chandlers and the Los Angeles Times this evening. Women’s page editor Maggie Savoy and her husband, editor Jim Bellows, both spent years at the Times. My article about Maggie was published this past March and I am working on an article about Jim. They are two of my favorites.

    New Maggie Savoy image

I just found this image of women’s page editor Maggie Savoy. It was taken in 1966 at the Society of Women Engineers National Convention in Phoenix. (Maggie is sitting on the far right.) The image can be found online at the Walter P Reuther Library. I think Maggie was working as the urban affairs writer for UPI at the time. Here is my article about Maggie that came out earlier this year. I am collecting new information about Maggie – focusing on her years at UPI. It was the only time she wrote under the byline “Maggie Bellows.” (Her third husband was the amazing newspaper editor Jim Bellows.)
