1968 Democratic National Convention/Police Riots
Yesterday, the Chicago Tribune published a story about the reunion for the 1968 Democratic National Convention/Police Riots. Los Angeles Times women’s page editor Maggie Savoy (shown above speaking at the University of Missouri in the 1960s) was gassed at the riots. She was in Chicago to cover the “women’s angle” of the Convention. This event was mentioned in Jim Bellows’ book, The Last Editor. My article about Maggie ran in California History this past Spring.

It’s going to be a baby boy
We learned yesterday that I am having a baby boy. His name will be Curtis James. He will be named for the husbands of two great women’s page editors: Curtis Castleberry (married to Vivian Castleberry) and James Bellows (married to Maggie Savoy). This is a photo with Vivian and Curtis. Lance and I stayed with them last summer for a few days in Dallas. This is a photo of Jim who I interviewed a few years ago. Jim (a great editor in his own right) died a few months ago – I learned about his death while I was in Dallas being interviewed for a documentary about Vivian Castleberry.

Maggie Savoy article published
My article about Los Angeles Times women’s page editor Maggie Savoy has been published in California History: Journal of the California Historical Society, 2009, Vol. 86, No. 3. It is the article I am most proud of researching and writing.

J Edward Murray image
I recently found this early photo of editor J Edward Murray (often known as JEM). He was women’s page editor Maggie Savoy at the Arizona Republic. I’m working on collecting information on supportive male editor including JEM and Jim Bellows. Here is a later photo of JEM.

Jim Bellows’ Memorial
The amazing Jim Bellow’s memorial was on Friday. I loved this column about the memorial. It made me cry. Jim was married to women’s page editor Maggie Savoy in the 1960s until her death in December 1970. I plan to write an article about Jim and his role in helping women in journalism.

Jim and Maggie in New York
Lance and I are in New York City for our annual visit. Jim Bellows and Maggie Savoy lived in New York City for a few years. (Maggie was the women’s page editor in Phoenix when she left the position to marry Jim.) They held great parties and practiced great journalism. They were an amazing couple. I interviewed Jim on the phone during one of our New York trips a few years ago. His memorial was on Friday. I am so glad I had the opportunity to speak to him about Maggie. He will be missed.
