I had a great time in Tampa at the 2015 Oral History Association Conference. I spoke about the women’s page editors who were part of the Washington Press Club Foundation’s Women in Journalism oral history project: Marie Anderson, Vivian Castleberry, Dorothy Jurney & Marjorie Paxson.

New Dorothy Jurney letter
I am back to working on my women and politics book that focuses on several women’s page editors, including Marjorie Paxson, Marie Anderson, Vera Glaser and Dorothy Jurney. In my research, I came across a great letter to women’s page editor Dorothy Jurney from food editor Eudora Garrison. It can be found in Jurney’s papers in the National Women & Media Collection. Dorothy was the women’s page editor at the Miami Herald in the 1950s when she was asked to go to the Charlotte Observer for a few weeks to help improve the women’s pages at that newspaper. AEJMC: Talking About Women’s Involvement in ASNE & APME
We had a great time at the AEJMC Conference in San Francisco earlier this month. Lance & I presented the poster “Crusaders, Not Subordinates: How Women’s Page Editors Worked to Change the Gender Climate Within APME and ASNE.” In the paper, we analyzed the work of women’s page editors Dorothy Jurney, Marie Anderson and Maggie Savoy. These women fought through the 1960s and early 1970s to improve the workplace for women journalists.
