Florida Historical Society: Florida Feminist Roxcy Bolton
I am excited to present a paper about Florida feminist Roxcy Bolton this weekend at the 2015 Florida Historical Society’s Annual Meeting in St. Augustine. Roxcy was a good friend of Marie Anderson, the longtime and award-winning women’s page editor of the Miami Herald. Here is my blog post about Roxcy for Ms Magazine & here is my blog post for We’re History.

Women’s History Month, 2015
March is Women’s History Month. Last year, I blogged each day in March about top food editors from my book, The Food Section. This year I blogged for different publications for Women’s History Month. I blogged for Ms Magazine about women’s page editor turned managing editor Carol Sutton. I also blogged for Ms Magazine about feminist leader Roxcy Bolton. She was a good friend of Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson. I will speak about Roxcy at the 2015 Florida Historical Society’s Annual Meeting in St. Augustine. I blogged for We’re History about Roxcy’s fight to name hurricanes for both men and women. Lastly, I blogged for We’re History…

Helen Muir’s Miami Tea Parties
I am working on one of my papers for the 2015 Florida Conference of Historians that I will be presenting next month in Lakeland. It’s called “Miami Maven Helen Muir: Writer, Historian, Advocate & Tea Party Host.” I went through Muir’s papers at the University of Miami a few years ago. Muir held annual tea parties for her friends who sometimes came from across the country to reunite. In this photo are women’s page journalists Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney.

Florida Women’s Page Journalism Publications
I was inspired to put together a list of my publications about Florida women’s page journalists from the 1950’s and 1960’s after re-reading the book Orange Journalism which overlooked Florida women’s pages. The photo above is of the women’s page department of the Miami Herald in the 1950’s. It includes Marie Anderson, Robert Applegate and Dorothy Jurney.

New Image of Dorothy Jurney & Marie Anderson
Jeanne Voltz was kind enough to share this great 1959 image of Miami Herald women’s page editors Dorothy Jurney and Marie Anderson. Jeanne’s mother was the food editor at the Herald in the 1950s. Dorothy Jurney was the women’s page editor at the Miami Herald in the 1950s, with Marie Anderson as her assistant. When Dorothy moved on the Detroit Free Press in the 1950s, Marie became the editor. Under her leadership, the women’s page section was retired from the Penney Missouri Awards – the top recognition for the pages – because it won so many times.
