Talking About Florida Women’s Page Editors
I am looking forward to presenting “Pioneering Florida Women’s Page Journalists: Managing Conflict and Encouraging Compromise in Their Communities, 1950s and 1960s,” at the Florida Council for History Education conference in Sarasota. Mixed in with the advertisements in the 1950s and 1960s, there were several newspaper women’s pages that included stories that were part of the women’s movement’s platform – stories about domestic violence, the Equal Rights Amendment and abortion reform. These stories reached large audiences and impacted the work of other editors and women leaders. The circulations of the papers were high so the work of the women editors reached large segments of their own communities and sometimes beyond…

Upcoming Marjorie Paxson Publications
With the weak obituary published by Marjorie Paxson’s newspaper, I have written about her significance. There will be an article in the State Historical Society of Missouri newsletter and the Media Report To Women. I also nominated her (again) for the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame.

Death of Newspaper Pioneer Marjorie Paxson
I was sad to learn that Marjorie Paxson has died. She was a pioneering women’s page editor who went on to become the fourth female publisher at Gannett. Her papers are available here. Here is a link to her oral history. Here is my article about Paxson. Marjorie is a major figure in my Women Politicking Politely book.

Women’s History Month: Day 16 & Marjorie Paxson
Day 16 of Womn’s History Month features Marjorie Paxson who helped found the National Women and Media Collection. She was a longtime women’s page journalist in Texas and Florida who became the fourth female publisher at Gannett. She worked on the hard news side during World War II and then returned to the women’s pages in peacetime. She worked at women’s pages in Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania. She was a good friend of Marie Anderson and Dorothy Jurney. Here is a link to the finding guide for her papers. Here is a link to an article Lance & I wrote about Paxson.

My Upcoming Book: Politicking Politely & Well-Behaved Women
I am finishing up the edits on my upcoming book, Politicking Politely: Well-Behaved Women Making a Difference in the 1960s and 1970s. My book focuses on 6 significant women. It includes the relatively unknown stories of two female political operatives who worked behind the scenes along with four female journalists who also occasionally worked within government to advance women’s rights during the 1950s through the 1970s. Much of it centers on Washington, D.C., as well as the more unlikely cities of Madison, Wisconsin, and Miami, Florida. It includes the story of a women’s page journalist who published an official government report in her newspaper section when the White House refused…
