Women’s History Month: Day 25 & Aileen Ryan
Day 25 of Women’s History Month features the Milwaukee Journal’s Aileen Ryan – a three-time Penney-Missouri Award winner. Each day this week will feature a Milwaukee Journal women’s page journalist. During her first summer of work in 1921, Ryan attended a meeting to hear Milwaukee Journal Editor Marvin Creager say he was happy to have females on the staff because “women have cleaned up newspaper offices.” Ryan later recalled the statement made her feel as though she had been hired to use a mop. AEJMC Talk: Women & Regional Journalism History
Had a great time talking about women’ page editors from Milwaukee and Miami at the Women and Regional Journalism History panel at AEJMC. Lance moderated the panel so our boys concentrated on their iPads.

Milwaukee Journal Research Acceptance
Excited that the article that Lance & I wrote about the women’s page journalists of the Milwaukee Journal has been accepted for publication in an academic journal. Included in the article are Aileen Ryan and Peggy Daum.

Women’s History Month: Clarice Rowlands
Day five of Women’s History Month features Clarice Rowlands. Clarice Rowlands was the food editor of the Milwaukee Journal in the 1950s – an interest that she said started when she was a member of the 4-H Club in high school. A 1936 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, she was a society reporter at a Green Bay newspaper from 1937 until 1943 and then joined the Journal. She said she was often asked the question that tends to irritate many food writers: “Does she cook?” Many of these women found that the question undermined their roles as journalists.
