1970 White House Task Force on Women’s Rights and Responsibilities
Here is a story about the White House marking Women’s History Month with a 50-year progress report. According to stories, this was the “first comprehensive federal report on the status of women’ since 1963.” The reporting in this story is incorrect. The White House Task Force on Women’s Rights and Responsibilities also issued a report in 1970. According to the Nixon Library:“In January 1969, Richard Nixon took the oath of office as President. At one of President Nixon’s early press conferences, Ms. Vera Glaser stood amid a forest of male colleagues, raised her strong, clear voice, and asked: “Mr. President, since you’ve been inaugurated, you have made approximately 200 presidential…

President Nixon & women
I have been working on an article about Vera Glaser, who in addition to being a women’s page political reporter was also a member of a White House Committee on women’s roles. Her question to the president at a press conference about the lack of women in government earned her national attention. In my research I came across the above photo and an interesting column on the Nixon Library website. Here is part of the column:“Looking back now, we know that President Nixon’s actions brought gender equality into the mainstream of American life. He made equality “legitimate.” This legitimacy rippled through our society and helped create new opportunities for women…

New information on East and Glaser
I have discovered new information about my research topic in a collection at one of the Duke University Libraries. In the papers of the Veteran Feminists of America, I found documents about women’s page and political journalist Vera Glaser and government source Catherine East. Included in the papers is a DVD tribute to East. I just placed an order to get copies of the materials. I have already gone through East’s papers at Harvard University and Glaser’s papers at the University of Wyoming. I am working on a paper about how Glaser and East worked together to hold the government and media accountable. I hope to present the paper at…
