Women’s Page Political Journalists Vera Glaser & Janet Chusmir
I have been going through the work of women’s page political journalist Vera Glaser for my book about women and politics. She covered many important issues, including the significant Women in Revolt series. I am working on material from Glaser’s column, Offbeat Washington, which she co-wrote with Malvina Stephenson. Janet Chusmir went on to become the first executive editor of the Miami Herald. Here is a clip of one of Chusmir’s stories from a 1968 Miami Herald women’s page. It was edited by Marie Anderson.

AFJ: Roy Peter Clark Talk
I had a wonderful time listening to Roy Peter Clark speak at the Association for Food Journalists Conference in St. Petersburg at the Poynter Institute. His analysis of food writer M.F.K. Fisher’s work was wonderful and a good lesson in storytelling.

The Creation of N.O.W.: Kay Clarenbach & Betty Friedan
I have been working on the creation of the National Organization for women and the role of Kay Clarenbach & Betty Friedan. This image is from the second meeting of the organization. Clarenbach has been largely overlooked in the history of N.O.W. My women and politics book will detail Clarenbach’s story. Clarenbach was good friends with Wisconsin’s women’s page editors and encouraged them to present reasonable media coverage of the women’s group. One of the only journalists to an early N.O.W. meeting was Milwaukee Journal women’s page editor Dorothy Witte Austin.
