One year in Florida
A year ago today we arrived in Orlando from St. Louis – our home for the previous five years. While here, we have continued to study women’s page editors. In the past year, we have visited three archives in Florida to collect materials: University of Miami, South Florida History Museum and the University of South Florida.
A true highlight of the past year was getting to speak to the daughters of several women’s page editors: Carol Sutton’s two daughters, Edee Green’s daughter Helen and Jeanne Voltz’s daughter, Jeanne. (Few women’s page journalists had children, but if they did, it was usually daughters.)
The more we learn about these women and their impact on both journalism and their communities – the more impressed we are. Several of their stories will be published in the upcoming year. It’s been a happy and productive beginning in our new state.
