    St. Pete Beach

Lance and I are on our way to St. Pete Beach for the weekend. Women’s page legend Dorothy Jurney’s brother, Richard Misener, was the mayor of St. Pete many years ago. He owned a big boat on the beach. Many Miami women’s page journalists would meet with Dorothy and go sailing. I’m hoping to visit an archive while we’re there.

    Helen Muir image

I just found this image of Miami journalist Helen Muir. (It’s in the Florida Photographic Collection.) I learned last week that Helen was Dorothy Jurney’s initial boss in the women’s at the Miami News before she left for Washington. Helen held an annual party for Dorothy after she left for Detroit. I am working on a revise and resubmit of Dorothy’s career. I plan to go through the papers of Helen Muir at the University of Miami in the future. Here is a link about her papers.

    Dorothy Jurney information

Yesterday I received the divorce record of legendary women’s page editor Dorothy Jurney. (It was found in the State of Florida Office of Vital Statistics.) Dorothy mentioned in her oral history that her husband Frank had appealed the ruling to the state Supreme Court. She also stated that she did not know why he had appealed the ruling for divorce. The record reveals why he may have appealed the ruling. The divorce was granted on Dorothy’s grounds of “extreme cruelty.” Here’s information about the appeal: Florida Case LawJURNEY v. Dorothy Jurney

I am working on the revisions of an article about women’s page editor Dorothy Jurney. She had such a long career that it is difficult to summarize without leaving out important information. This is the photo of Miami millionaire Neville McArthur who proposed to Dorothy twice while she was divorcing her husband Frank in 1959. She said no and moved on to Detroit. Proof of that story can be found here.
