Florida Communication Association Conference, 2015
It was another week and another conference. Yesterday I presented “Everything Old is New Again: Historical Take on New Directions in Communication” at the Florida Communication Association Conference. In the paper, I looked at how women’s page editors used social media strategies like being hyperlocal, crowd sourcing and creating community in the 1950s and the 1960s – especially at Florida newspapers.

Newspaper Picture Recipes
I came across this great images as I continuing writing about Chicago Tribune food editor Ruth Ellen Church. These “picture recipes” remind me of the food blogs of today. Church was in charge of overseeing the photo shoots as the pictures were taken in her Tribune test kitchen.

Association of Food Journalists Panel
I enjoyed being part of the Association of Food Journalism panel: The Changing Landscape of Food Journalism I was on the panel along with Kim Severson – four-time James Beard award-winning food writer for The New York Times and author of four books – came up through the newspaper industry; Kat Kinsman – managing editor of Eatocracy, CNN’s food blog, with more than 47,000 Twitter followers. Sid Evans – editor-in-chief of Southern Living and group editor of Time Inc.’s Lifestyle Division (including Cooking Light, Coastal Living and Sunset). Charlotte Observer food editor and blogger Kathleen Purvis moderated.
