    Bravo & the Four Fs

I spent the afternoon catching up on Bravo shows on TiVo: Top Chef and Project Runway. (I am pretending that Project Runway is not on Lifetime.) It’s one of the best parts of maternity leave – spending the afternoon with Curtis on the sofa. Much of Bravo’s programming revolves around the four Fs of the women’s pages: family, fashion, food and furnishings. If the women I study were around today, Eleni Epstein would be a great Project Runway judge. (That’s her in the photo above.) She was the longtime fashion editor at the Washington Star and a real personality – usually just going by “eleni.” Jeanne Voltz, food editor at…

    Julie and Julia

We went to see the movie, Julie and Julia, yesterday. (The movie was much better than the book.) This 1978 image of Julia Child is from the Chicago Tribune photo archives. Here is the story. Food editor Jeanne Voltz (of the Miami Herald and then Los Angeles Times women’s pages) must have known Julia – they traveled in the same circles, including being friends with James Beard. I recently wrote a book chapter about Jeanne and I am continuing to study food journalism.

    James Beard House

Here is a tour of James Beard’s house. Miami Herald and Los Angeles Times food journalist Jeanne Voltz was a friend of Beard and often cooked for him. (Jeanne was a journalist who used her reporting skills to become a great food writer after getting her start under women’s page journalist Dorothy Jurney.) I am working a biographical article about Beard for the book, Icons of American Cooking. He was an amazing man with respect for food sections that started in the women’s pages.

    Jeanne Voltz and BBQ

Lance is BBQing his way through the Jeanne Voltz book: Barbecued Ribs, Smoked Butts and Other Great Feeds. Food great James Beard wrote of it: “Jeanne Voltz has written a definitive book on barbecuing.” Jeanne started her food journalism career in the 1950s women’s section of the Miami Herald, working for Dorothy Jurney. I am working on a biography chapter of Jeanne and her work at the Los Angeles Times for a book about culinary history.

    James Beard article

I just signed a contract with ABC-CLIO for a chapter on cooking great James Beard. He was a good friend of women’s page food journalist Jeanne Voltz. James would often go to dinner at Jeanne’s house where she would cook for him. She started as a journalist at the Miami Herald who learned about food over the years and eventually became an expert. Part of my research focuses on the examination of the four Fs of the women’s pages: family, fashion, food and furnishings.

Easter cooking & women’s page food editor

Lance & I are cooking a big Easter dinner. We typically draw from the recipes of Jeanne Voltz, who was the food editor at the Miami Herald and the Los Angeles Times. Jeanne Voltz was a good friend of the great James Beard. She used to make dinner for him at her house which seems amazing. I am working on a chapter about James Beard for a book about Cooking Icons.
