I had a great time talking about Florida women’s page editors in Sarasota at the Florida Council for History Education. It was a full room with some great questions.

Death of Roxcy Bolton
I was sad to read about the death of Roxcy Bolton who worked closely with Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson. Here is her NYT obituary. I wrote about Roxcy for the Ms Magazine blog and We’re History. I also presented a paper about Bolton at the meeting of the Florida Historical Society.

Women’s History Month: Day 23 & Miami Herald Women’s Pages
For day 23 of Women’s History Month: Miami Herald women’s pages – considered the best in the country in the 1950s and 1960s. I love this image which would have been taken in the 1950s. This photo includes Roberta Applegate, Dorothy Jurney, Marie Anderson and Jeanne Voltz.

Women’s History Month, Day 9 & Marie Anderson
Marie Anderson was a groundbreaking women’s page editor at the Miami Herald. She was mentored by Dorothy Jurney who I blogged about yesterday. In this photo, Marie (wearing the glasses) is speaking with club editor Roberta Applegate. Marie won so many Penney-Missouri Awards (the top recognition for women’s pages) during the 1960s that she was retired from the competition. She was a leader in the women’s page community. Marie was interviewed for the Washington Press Club Foundation’s “Women in Journalism” oral history project. She was beginning to lose her memory and the interview does not provide much detail about her career. Her papers are part of the National Women &…
